Families are built on understanding and connection. Let us work together to build a deeper understanding and connection within your family unit.

Family Therapy – Kirriemuir, Angus

Even as adults, family can be complicated. You may love each other deeply — but still find yourselves caught in painful dynamics, ongoing tension, or long silences that never seem to get resolved. Family therapy offers a space to explore those patterns together, safely and honestly.

Unlike individual therapy, family therapy focuses on treating the family, addressing the relationships and dynamics within the unit rather than just individual symptoms or issues.

Family therapy offers a path to healing and growth, not just for individual members, but for the family unit.

Family Therapy FAQs

I work from a Transactional Analysis (TA) perspective, which helps us explore how each family member’s history, communication style, and unspoken roles contribute to the current dynamic.

TA can help shed light on familiar but frustrating patterns — like feeling like “the fixer,” “the black sheep,” or “the one who holds it all together.” Therapy is a space where these roles can be explored, softened, and understood — not blamed.

We create a space where each voice matters, and where healing conversations can start to take place.

Family therapy can involve:

  • One or more adult children with one or both parents
  • Siblings
  • Blended families (step-parents, step-siblings, etc.
  • Any adult family group navigating conflict, loss, or change

If you’re unsure who should be involved, we can talk it through together.

Every family has its own history — and its own set of challenges. Family therapy can be helpful when you’re experiencing:

  • Ongoing conflict or breakdowns in communication
  • Feeling stuck in old roles or “walking on eggshells”
  • Tensions between parents and adult children
  • Navigating care responsibilities or life stage shifts
  • Grief, loss, or major family transitions
  • Blended family dynamics or unresolved past events
  • Estrangement or emotional distance
  • Wanting to reconnect, but unsure how

You may not even be sure how things got this way — only that something needs to change.

In family therapy sessions, you can expect:

  • I play a facilitative role, guiding discussions and interventions.
  • Sessions to typically involve multiple family members, with formats varying based on the therapist’s approach.
  • A collaborative nature, where each family member’s input is valued and considered.

Family therapy aims to bring about several key benefits, such as:

  • Improved Relationships: Fostering a deeper understanding and stronger bonds between family members.
  • Enhanced Communication Skills: Teaching effective ways to communicate needs and listen to others.
  • Increased Understanding of Family Dynamics: Recognising and addressing patterns that may be harmful or unproductive.
  • Better Problem-Solving Abilities: Equipping family members with skills to address and resolve future issues collaboratively.
