Relationship Counselling, Kirriemuir, Angus
When communication breaks down, connection follows. Whether you’re stuck in the same arguments, feeling more like housemates than partners, or wondering whether your relationship can be repaired — you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Couples therapy offers a calm, respectful space to untangle what’s going on between you, understand what’s underneath the conflict or disconnection, and find a way forward — together or apart.
You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to get help. If you’re struggling to connect, or not sure where to start, I’m here to help.
I work from a Transactional Analysis (TA) perspective, which helps us look at the unconscious patterns that might be playing out between you — often learned in childhood, and triggered most deeply in our closest relationships.
We’ll look at how each of you communicates, protects yourselves, reacts under pressure, and how you can begin to listen and respond differently. You’ll each be heard in the room — not blamed, not labelled — and we’ll work collaboratively to create understanding and change
There is no single reason relationships face difficulties or break down. However, by fostering a deeper understanding and improving communication, individuals can build stronger foundations and discover their own resolutions to the challenges they face.
Whether you’re here to repair or clarify, therapy offers a space to pause the cycle, speak openly, and start hearing one another again.
FAQ’S About Relationship Therapy
Is Relationships Counselling for me?
Do you and your partner have the relationship you really want? Most of us live in ambivalent relationships, not bad, but not great either. Your relationship could be the source of the greatest joy and support in your life. If it is not, maybe I can be of help?
Relationship counselling doesn’t have to be just for couples in crisis. Think of me as your personal relationship coach.
How will I help your relationship?
I can help you develop your relationship in a number of ways. I often start with some practical exercises to help you:
- Set limits on conflict and develop rules for fair fighting. I can help you turn your differences into an opportunity for greater understanding.
- Help you understand why your efforts may not be appreciated by your partner and vice versa.
- Learn new communication skills that help you develop greater understanding and intimacy.
I see relational problems as essentially co-created. This means that it will take change by both of you to create new solutions for your relationship.
How long does it take?
This really depends on what you bring to therapy. Many relationships simply struggle to manage the changing stresses on the relationship as it develops over time. Learning some simple skills can empower you to make changes for yourself. In this case, many couples respond within 8-12 sessions.
For others change may be more difficult. You bring certain stuck ways of behaving that are influenced by your childhood or previous relationships. In this case, you may need ongoing couples therapy, mixed with some individual work.
How much does it cost?
Couples Counselling is £70 per hour and normally takes anywhere between 8-12 sessions. There is an initial assessment that will take 1 hr the cost of this is £50. If you need further sessions this can be arranged.
How long will session last?
Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes. The number of sessions needed varies depending on individual circumstances. However, I usually recommend 6 to 8 sessions as a starting point.
What happens during a session?
We start by discussing the specific issues or concerns you are facing. Together, we will work to identify your goals and develop strategies to help you achieve them.
Whether it’s resolving a specific issue or exploring deeper relational dynamics. You’ll be supported equally and compassionately, with space to speak honestly and safely.
Should We Stay Together?
Sometimes, couples come to therapy because they’re unsure whether the relationship has a future. This is OK too. I offer discernment counselling — a supportive space to help you both reflect, explore, and decide, either way, with clarity and respect.
Why Do Couples Come To Therapy?
There are so many reasons couples seek help. You might be:
- Arguing constantly or walking on eggshells
- Struggling with trust or emotional intimacy
- Feeling more distant than close
- Recovering from infidelity or betrayal
- Trying to parent through conflict
- Caught in a cycle of blame, hurt, and shutdown
- Wondering whether to stay or separate
- Wanting to reconnect but not sure how
You don’t need to be in crisis to come to therapy — but if you are, it can be a vital lifeline.
